Chevrolet Spark Will Launch With Efficient 1.0- and 1.2-Liter 4-Cylinder Gas Engines
By Scott Doggett February 10, 2009
The all-new Chevrolet Spark, which will make its world premiere at the Geneva Auto Show in March, will launch in Europe featuring 1.0- and 1.2-liter, 16-valve four-cylinder double-overhead-camshaft gasoline engines, the automaker announced today.
Chevy would not discuss the vehicle's fuel economy, other than to say that both engines deliver "excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions."
Spark will be available in European dealerships in early 2010, followed by the United States and other countries.
The car was inspired by the Chevrolet Beat Concept, the most popular of a trio of mini-car concepts that has toured international auto shows since 2007. Chevy said a clear majority of the 1.9 million Internet voters said it was the car they wanted produced.
Safety equipment will include driver and passenger front air bags, front side airbags, roof rail head curtain airbags, antilock brakes and electronic stability control. Other safety features will include pre-tensioners for front seat belts and three-point belts in the rear.
The crisp lines of the five-door hatchback provide the wedge-like profile common to so many small cars these days. Below the two-tier grille and pointy headlamps, the shape of the fog-lamp housings and the "floating" lower air intake are intended to convey the sense of forward movement.
An uncommon feature is the motorcycle-inspired instrument cluster. Mounted on the steering column, it provides easy-to-read information to the driver utilizing a combination of analog and digital displays.
Price, mileage and emissions information will hopefully be forthcoming in Geneva next month.
