2010 Detroit Auto Show: Musk Says Tesla Is Close to Decision on Plant for Model S

Elon-Musk-at-2010-NAIAS.jpg#NAIAS - The crowd of reporters that gathered at Tesla Motors' exhibit stand at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit today had hoped to hear Elon Musk announce that the company had decided where it would produce its upcoming Model S electric vehicle.

Instead, the young, soft-spoken chief executive said a decision was close, that Tesla was doing "final due diligence." News of where the automaker's second zero-emissions highway-capable electric car - behind the Roadster and its amped-up Roadster Sport sibling - will be factory-built will come another day.

But all was not lost for those in attendance. Lurking behind Musk in a deep candy-apple red  paint job was a prototype Model S, making its first auto-show debut. And elsewhere in the Tesla area gleamed a metallic-white Roadster Sport - the 1,000 production vehicle assembled by the Silicon Valley automaker.

While much larger automakers have announced their battery-electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle plans at nearby exhibition sites the past two days, Tesla's No. 1,000 stood as a bright reminder that the compoany has been producing EVs while big auto has been talking and researching and planning.

Barring production delays, that won't be the case at next year's Detroit Auto Show.Tesla-Model-S-at-2010-NAIAS-front-left.jpg
