GM Video Explains Workings of Volt Extended Range Electric Drive System

By John O'Dell January 29, 2010

Having problems understanding how the Chevrolet Volt is supposed to work, or just can't get enough of GM's upcoming extended-range, plug-in hybrid sedan?

Well,GM has put together this short video that provide a good, though basic, look at how the Volt and its fuel-augmented electric drive Voltec system works.

Just remember, as you watch and listen, that the car's grid-charged electric range really will depend on driving style - also on weather and terrain.

We think the Voltec system will be a game-changer, but don't want people believing that they can get in the Volt, hit the freeway and get 40 miles on the battery's initial charge while driving 80 mph (or while heading up a mountain or when driving in sub-freezing weather).

I don't see it being a game changer at all. Too many compromises despite what the nice lady says. As an electric car it's range is somewhere between a 1/3 and 1/2 (or maybe a 1/4 depending what you read) of the MiniE.

As a gas car it will be underpowered, bland and way too much money.

The smart green money will still buy the Prius.

I disagree with firstwagon (again). This is an EV that eliminates the two largest hurdles with EVs. Range anxiety and recharge time.

Well it doesn't eliminate them, but it hides them. If we're going to go the EV route, this is the kind of transition vehicle that's needed.

Will it be a success? I've no idea.
