Tesla Schedules Shipment of Right-Hand Drive Roadsters for Japanese Market

TeslaRHdrive.jpgEV-maker Tesla motors says it will ship its first contingent of Roadsters to Tokyo next week - a move that makes it one of the few U.S.,-based automakers to crack that market.

The company is withholding most info about the deal until an April 21 press conference, but we've been told the shipment will consist of a dozen of Tesla's Signature Series Roadsters. The right-hand drive cars - they drive on the "wrong side" in Japan -  were introduced in London in February.

The cars will be the first EVs from an American automaker to be sold in Japan, where Mitsubishi and Subaru have recently begin selling limited numbers of small electric commuter cars and where Nissan will begin selling its 5-passenger Leaf hatchback EV later this year.

The cars are being shipped from California's Port Hueneme, about 60 miles north of Los Angeles.

In recent weeks, Tesla has also delivered Roadsters to buyers in Spain and Ireland.
