Nissan Leaf Ad to Be Among the First to Appear on Next-Generation Apple iPhone

By Scott Doggett June 7, 2010

iPhoneOS4-Leaf-ad.jpgAppleman Steve Jobs introduced the next-generation iPhone today and - surely to everyone's delight - gleefully announced that it will carry advertisements he calls iAds.

Who doesn't want more ads in their ad-filled life?

Jobs didn't spend much time discussing the ads users of the fourth-generation iPhones can expect to see, but he did identify one of the upcoming ads. As you might have guessed from the image, it's an ad - make that iAd - for the Nissan Leaf battery-electric vehicle.

It's a clever ad, really. There's question - "how far can you drive on $1?" - and a series of answers. If you own a Leaf, you can go 38 miles. If you own a Hummer H3 V8, 4.8 miles; a Mini Cooper S, 9.2; a Toyota Prius, 17.

It's got to be true because it's an ad, and there's nothing but truth in advertising. The ad also features features of the Leaf. And you can register to buy a Leaf right there on the phone - iPhone, that is.

But wait, there's more. If we understand correctly, if you buy an iPhone 4 you can be eligible to win a Leaf. You and - what? - a million other people. One-in-a-million odds. We'll take it!

We don't like the idea that ads will now be appearing on our iPhones, but it's good to see Nissan promoting it's upcoming EV, which will be available in the U.S. later this year. And that's the truth.

Disappointing. Ads are the second most annoying things in the world. I can see it now. "You have an incoming call from 'MOM'. But first, watch a short message from our sponsors." And as your mother waits, she'll hear "While you wait to be connected, please enjoy these messages for products you might enjoy." Remind me NOT to buy an iPhone 4.

All lies! I get about "10.9 miles per dollar" in my 2005 Corvette @ 55mph (30mpg @ $2.75 a gallon)

Of course, in a fire-breathing Tri-power 427 Corvette... well, that's different.

Can't wait for the all-electric Vette for cruisin' on a Saturday night, and doing 0-60 in 3 seconds...

:)

I don't follow the iPhone. Someone explain to me why it has any ads at all.

docrings, agreed. It looks like it lies big time. Then again, that's what ads do.

docrings, you are an idiot. They are clearly using the EPA estimates and an estimate of the price of a gallon of gas. Although you can't verify it for the Leaf, these estimates are believable. Anybody can pull out real world numbers that don't agree with someone else's estimates. That doesn't mean they're lying. I once got 13 mpg in a 2005 Corvette, when gas was about $2.00 a gallon. That's 6.5 miles per dollar; which, by your logic, means YOU are lying.

Whoa greenpony! Need no to get personal.

Brn, an iPhone is a powerful and wonderful handheld computer that can perform an extraordinary number of tasks and do it remarkably well, except place and receive calls with anything approaching reliable service, at least in San Francisco. In that market, it's an insidious device invented by Satan himself. At least my iPhone is. The next-gen iPhone shouldn't bombard iPhone users with annoying ads and prematurely age those fine carbon-based lifeforms with unnecessary stress, unless you own Apple shares, in which case you'll be delighted with the new revenue stream the Applepeople have developed and the lift it'll give your investment.

You're right, Scott. I do appreciate the use of "whoa" with "pony" though. My stetson just blew off and landed on the open prairie.
