Enova will combine its Omni controller with Remy's HVH motor, the companies said in a statement today. The companies signed a non-exclusive agreement on June 30.

Through the partnership, the companies are looking to further benefit from growing demand for both hybrid and battery-electric vehicles, whose annual production was estimated in March by Boston-based research firm Strategy Analytics to more than triple over the next six years.

"Combined, these two technologies and the expertise behind them create a solution that will enable vehicle manufacturers and system integrators to more easily and efficiently develop reliable, high-performance drivetrains," Enova CEO Mike Staran, said in the statement.

Last August, Remy, along with John Deere division Phoenix International, was awarded a $60.2-million grant from the U.S. Energy Department to create a standardized version of hybrid-electric motors.

Two months later, the company formerly known as Delco Remy, which was founded in 1918 as a General Motors division and was split off from GM in 1994, unveiled its first "off-the-shelf" motor designed for hybrid vehicles.

Enova last August delivered the first of the 220 "pre-transmission" hybrid-drive systems ordered by China's First Auto Works, which builds trucks and buses as well as cars. U.K.-based Smith Electric Vehicles is also a customer of Torrance, Calif.-based Enova.
