ZAP Battery-Electric Truck and Van Qualify for Up to $2,500 in Federal Tax Credits

ZAP-Truck XL.jpgThe U.S. Internal Revenue Service has determined that the low-speed, battery-electric ZAP Truck XL (shown at right and priced at $14,695) and ZAP Van Shuttle ($15,200) qualify under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for a ten percent tax credit up to a maximum of $2,500, if purchased after Feb. 17, 2009 and before Jan. 1, 2012.

Both plug-in, zero-local-emissions vehicles have a top speed of about 25 miles per hour and a range of about 30 miles per charge, according to the company.

ZAP recently sold a small fleet of battery-electric vehicles to the City of Riverside in California, and it has also sold vehicles to the U.S. government,  Fortune 500 companies, universities and small-business owners.

ZAPVan-Shuttle.jpg"Combined with lower fueling and maintenance costs, which can be a third of conventional cars, this can be a great incentive for our customers to integrate electric vehicle technology into their fleets," ZAP CEO Steve Schneider said in a statement issued today.

ZAP claims to have delivered over 117,000 electric vehicles to more than 75 countries since 1994. But the company has also been accused of taking millions from investors and dealers and, essentially, ripping them off.

Anyone looking to buy a ZAP vehicle or invest in the company might find an article published by Wired magazine a couple of years ago worth reading.
