Chevrolet Volt: 60,000 Copies a Year, Sources Tell Bloomberg

General Motors may build as many as 60,000 of its Volt electric cars for their Volt_210 inaugural year on the market, four times the sales of Toyota's Prius hybrid on its U.S. debut, people with knowledge of GM's plans told Bloomberg News.

Production at that level may allow GM to sell the plug-in Volt for less than $30,000 (the Prius starts at $22,175 with 60,000 a year sold in the U.S.), the sources said.

The sources told Bloomberg that GM believes an affordable electric car will help spur a revival and leapfrogging technology is the path to gaining ground on Toyota.

GM is shooting for late 2010 for the introduction of the production Volt.

Analysts’ reaction to GM’s volume goals for the Volt ranged from difficult but significant to “totally ridiculous” by a president of a California consultant on batteries.

If GM can make the Volt work like they claim, they'll easily sell that many. Go watch the webcast at www.gm.com/volt. It's time for a major breakthrough in automotive design and this is it. 100 mpg running on a motor that generates electricity and is not connected to the wheels. Diesel train engines have worked this way for 50 years.

The way to beat the Japanese is to keep innovating. Tokyo is sticking with Nickel Hydride batteries and ugly Prius styling. The Volt will boost GM back to number one in short order. My only question is why didn't we get this technology 10 years ago?
