Ford-UAW Talks: Job Security at Issue

Now that the United Auto Workers union has settled contracts with the Chrysler and General Motors, it turns its attention this week to Ford.

The union is well aware of Ford’s financial situation -– the most precarious of the Big Three –- and is likely to give Ford more cost concessions than it did Chrysler and GM. But, in return, it wants more job guarantees.

The union wants Ford to back off of its plans to close 16 plants under its “Way Forward” recovery initiative. Under that plan, Ford will close 16 plants -– 10 of which have been identified - and eliminate 44,000 jobs. In light of still sliding sales and market share, Ford will be hesitant to do so; some analysts believe Ford’s cuts need to go even deeper than those previously announced.
