UAW Puts Chrysler on Strike Notice
By Michelle Krebs October 8, 2007The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has set Tuesday as a strike deadline for Chrysler, people familiar with
the negotiations told Bloomberg News.
The union gave Chrysler, now owned by Cerberus Capital Management, 72-hour notice that it is terminating further contract extensions. After 11 a.m. Wednesday, a strike is possible. The contract had been extended after the September 14 deadline so that the UAW could concentrate on negotiations with General Motors.
The union is seeking an agreement with Chrysler -â and Ford, next â- that is patterned after the GM agreement. Union members are now voting on the GM contract; those votes are expected to be completed by Wednesday.
It appears the UAW has adopted with Chrysler the same strategy it used in the GM talks, whereby it had its first national strike in 37 years. That strike lasted only two days before a tentative agreement was announced.
