Hot Topics: Chrysler Future Products
November 09, 2007
AutoObserver’s analysis of Chrysler’s product and plant strategies -– “Chrysler Product Cupboard is Strikingly Bare” –- and an article Chrysler’s SRT performance division escaping the cost-cutting knife prompted a flurry of feedback from readers this week.
Readers readily recognized, indeed, how bare Chrysler’s cupboard is. Chrysler’s new management better be doing the same. No company can save its way to prosperity. Turnarounds only occur on the strength of good, new products.
Readers used words like “scary,” “weak” and “depressing,” to describe Chrysler’s condition.
Many readers noted, as the analysis did, Chrysler’s lack of competitive midsize cars to go up against the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and even now the Chevrolet Malibu. Similarly, readers pointed out Chrysler’s lack of a significant hybrid presence, a complete absence of small cars and a dearth of crossovers.
Not surprisingly, debate raged about the future of Viper. Keep it to compete against the Chevrolet Corvette, some said. “Put Viper on pause,” said another as Chrysler focuses on more high-volume models.
The same reader suggested Chrysler partner with Volkswagen for small cars, like those from Seat. Indeed, Chrysler is exploring partnerships worldwide in its strategy to put its own “top hats” on existing platforms.
Some wondered if Daimler is to be blamed for Chrysler’s bad shape.
