Malibu_turned_right_240 General Motors has increased the production of its popular new Chevrolet Malibu by building it at a second assembly plant.

Malibu production has been expanded to GM's Orion Township, Mich., plant, to meet the high demand for the car.

The Malibu is winning critical acclaim and is one of three finalists for the North American Car of the Year award to be announced next Sunday.

The midsize sedan previously was built at a single plant in Fairfax, Kan.

The Michigan plant also makes the Pontiac G6, which shares the same platform with the Malibu. Both the Michigan and Fairfax plants operate two shifts, building 60 vehicles an hour.
