Edmunds.com's Inside Line Honored for Product Reviews

The Detroit Press Club Foundation presented the 2008 International Wheel Awards at the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Mich., Thursday. Edmunds.com's Inside Line won two awards for product reviews in the Internet category.

Video Producer Glenn McClanan won 1st place for his review of the 2007 Dodge Charger police package. Chief Road Test Editor Chris Walton won 2nd place for his test of the 2008 Cadillac CTS V6 DI.

The International Wheel Awards honor excellence in automotive journalism in various print, electronic and online categories.

The judges from Northwestern University's Medill school of journalism in Chicago said the following of McClanan's review of the police-version Charger:

"Now here's how to use humor to tell a story! Follow-up Test: 2007 Dodge Charger Police Package" is an informative and irreverent look at the Dodge that seeks to unseat the Ford Crown Vic as the car for crops. The story and accompanying video are written in street language and humor; the sight gags make you laugh out loud (lol). We loved this piece."

The top honor -- the Golden Wheel Award -- went to The Kansas City Star for its news story entitled "Fatal Failures," by Mike Casey and Rick Montgomery. The reporters analyzed 1.9 million records compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and discovered that 1,400 people were killed from 2001 to 2006 because the front-seat passenger airbags did not deploy during front-end crashes.

Of the piece, the judges said: "This exhaustive reporting exercise, and the clear, compelling writing that told the story, cannot bring back the 1,400 lives lost, but it surely will have saved many lives in the future. It's the best of what journalism can be."

Bloomberg News took home the most awards with eight in a variety of categories from news service to television documentary. Trade publications Ward's Auto World and Automotive News each received five awards. The Detroit Free Press received four; the Detroit News won three. Motorweek, which originates from Maryland Public Television, swept the television category winning three awards. Forbes' auto writer Alex Taylor III received two awards - one for a piece on CNN/Money and a second for an article in Forbes Small Business magazine. The Wall Street Journal's Joe White received one award. Car and Driver and Motor Trend magazines received one award each.
