Automakers Receive Report Cards This Week
By Michelle Krebs June 2, 2008Just as school kids are heading home with report cards, so too is the auto industry receiving grades this week on sales, overall performance, quality and productivity.
Tuesday: General Motors holds its annual meeting in Wilmington, Del. CEO Rick Wagoner is expected to outline a new cost-cutting plan and a shift in GM's vehicle line up and plant capacity.
Tuesday: All automakers selling new vehicles in the U.S. issue sales reports for May. A forecast by Edmunds.com, parent of AutoObserver, shows industry sales in May being lower than a year ago but improved from dismal April. The Big Three look to be the losers while Honda and Toyota, which is predicted to capture record market share, likely will be the winners as the entire industry shifts to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.
Wednesday: J. D. Power and Associates issues is highly anticipated annual Initial Quality Survey results, grading automakers and their vehicles on quality in the first 90 days of ownership.
Thursday: Oliver Wyman, publisher of the Harbour Report, announces the result of its annual productivity report. The well-respected report meausres the efficienty of car plants.
