Chrysler Pushing for Four-Day Work Week

By Michelle Krebs August 12, 2008

Chrysler confirmed it is talking to the United Auto Workers union about some plants going to a four-day work week with 10-hour days in order to cut costs.

Chrysler wants to put five assembly, three engine and four component plants on the shortened week. A decision is expected within a few weeks. Such a move would be permanent, a company spokesman said.

Makes sense. And not just for Chrysler LLC. For the employees, one less trip to work each week, one less day of daycare, which would have the effect of an increase in net pay. For Chrysler, one more day with the lights off and the heat turned down, 40-odd thousand fewer time cards to audit each week.
