India's Tata Relents; Will Move Nano Factory

India's Tata Motors Ltd. Confirmed Friday it will shift a planned factory to build the Nano, billed as the world's cheapest car, from the eastern state of West Bengal because of violent political opposition to the project from a political party and farmers.

"We don't see any change in the horizon in West Bengal (to the political opposition)," Tata Chairman and Founder Ratan Tata told a televised news conference. "This (relocation) was done for the well-being of our employees, safety of our contractors and vendors."

Tata had planned to introduce the $2,500 Nano minicar later this month. However, it halted construction on the Nano plant Sept. 2 due to the political uprisings.
