AutoNation CEO Promotes Higher Gas Tax

AutoNation Mike Jackson.jpg Mike Jackson, CEO AutoNation, the country's largest dealer group, said the federal government needs to gradually increase gasoline taxes if it wants to decrease dependence on foreign oil and promote cleaner vehicles.

Speaking to the Automotive News World Congress in Detroit, Jackson said cheap gas will keep consumers from buying automakers' vehicles equipped with technology for fuel-efficiency.

"Cheap gasoline combined with fuel-efficiency mandated by the government is an economic disaster for America," Jackson told the industry gathering.

Earlier this month, Edmunds.com, parent of AutoObserver, took and promoted the same position.
