Edmunds.com Gives Away $10 Million of Ads Urging Americans To Buy Cars
January 16, 2009
Online car-buying site Edmunds.com, parent of AutoObserver, is giving away $10 million
worth of advertising in an effort to spur Americans to start buying new cars and trucks again and is asking other media companies to follow suit.
"While we all can feel optimistic about a new year, a new presidential administration and other elements of our future, we can't ignore the fact that this is an incredibly difficult economic time," said Edmunds.com CEO Jeremy Anwyl in his letter to media publishers. "In better years, we've all built businesses that rely heavily on the car business. Now, the car business needs our help. Can we publishers do something to recharge the car business, and, in turn, our economy? We think so."
To that end, Edmunds.com is donating $10 million worth of advertising space to communicate a message it calls Drive America Forward, an effort that strives to help the auto industry and, in turn, the economy, return to a stable, healthy state. The campaign covers all vehicle brands sold in the U.S.
At the same time, Edmunds.com is urging other media companies to do the same and is providing them with free use of the Edmunds-created ads to do so. The message of these public service announcements is that it is a great time to buy since automakers are offering great deals. Edmunds.com is running the ad throughout its Web site and links it to a landing page featuring relevant and readily updated information.
AutoTrader has accepted Edmunds.com's challenge. It is using similar ads that it created.
