Honda Will Be No-Show at Frankfurt Auto Show

TOKYO -- Honda announced Tuesday that it has canceled plans to participate in this fall's Honda logo - 144.JPG Frankfurt auto show due to the "unprecedented market turndown."

"As seen in the withdrawal from Formula One, Honda is trying to reduce every possible cost in various areas including manufacturing, sales and marketing activities to strengthen its business constitution to overcome the tough climate of today," according to the company's press release. Honda earlier closed its assembly plant in the U.K. for a lengthy four months to reduce inventories due to slow sales.

Instead of displaying at the Frankfurt auto show, Honda said it will use its European resources to strengthen new fuel-cell research, its hybrid vehicle portfolio and Honda Academy for quality and customer service training.

Honda also said it is taking full advantage of the four-month shutdown of its assembly plant in Swindon, U.K. to refurbish the facility in preparation of the smooth introduction this fall of the Honda Jazz, known in the U.S. as the Honda Fit.
