Screaming Deals on Convertibles, Luxury Cars, Sports Cars and Dying Models, Edmunds.com Reports
By Michelle Krebs October 23, 2009The industry's best deals right now are in luxury cars, sports cars and convertibles as well as leftover 2009 models, according to Edmunds.com.
As for brands, Lincoln, Saab and Volvo are offering great deals, as are Pontiac and Saturn, which are being discountinued completely by General Motors.
"Dealers should be open to any decent offer since they know that these vehicles, which often sell to a fashion-conscious crowd, will drop in value once the 2010 model year vehicles roll in. There will be nothing harder to sell than a 2009 convertible in winter with 2010 fast approaching," said Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell. And there is ample inventory of 2009 models, she added
"Lincoln, Saab and Volvo in particular are great deals right now - each has a history of significant depreciation during model year changeovers, and this year it may be more dramatic than ever," said Caldwell. "The economy has hit them hard, and today's favorable used car pricing is creating heavy competition against their new models."
Every remaining Pontiac and Saturn is also selling at significant discounts due to the imminent closure of the brands. Knowing that dealers must rid their lots of these discontinued models can give consumers a bargaining advantage.
Among the models recommended for immediate purchase in Edmunds.com's article "Top 10 Dead or Dying Models" at are the: BMW Z4 Coupe; Ford Taurus X; Hyundai Entourage; Pontiac G8; and Toyota Camry Solara.
"These vehicles are also great bargains on the used car market, since discontinued models typically experience steeper-than-usual depreciation," reported Edmunds.com Editor Warren Clarke.
Car prices are expected to continue falling for 68 percent of all remaining 2009 models. Most of the remaining vehicles will hold their current prices, since they are already discounted to the full capacity.

Good deals can be had on the soon-to-be-defunct Pontiac G8.

Why buy now? Wait a till Christmas when 10%+ unemployment and faint memories of the cash for clunker days will cause the discounts to get even larger.
The S2000 fits 3 of 4 of those categories (and arguably luxury, too). I'm curious what kind of deal I could get.
Any "decent" offer on a leftover 2009 should include a profit to the dealer, however small it may be. Convertibles in winter are not a dead issue here in Florida---we sold out our C70's 2 months ago because of terrific incentives. We're in the 2010 business now.
