2010 New York Auto Show: The 2011 Scion iQ Greets the World in Production Form
By Scott Doggett March 31, 2010
At long last, Toyota today pulled the cover off the production version of its iQ, a fuel-efficient city car that the Japanese automaker describes as "the world's smallest four-passenger vehicle."
In fact, it's 3+1 seating requires that one of the occupants be a child or a pet or small package. But Toyota wants you to know the back seats, which can fold flat, create enough storage to accommodate up to two golf bags.
Oddly, none of the journalists who crowded around the iQ had the IQ to bring two sets of clubs to the vehicle's debut.
The iQ is exactly 120 inches long. By comparison, a four-seat 2010 Mini Cooper is a whopping 145.6 inches long.
The iQ is small in size but large on safety. Safety features include vehicle stability control, anti-lock brakes, traction control, 10 - count 'em 10 - airbags, including the world's first rear-window curtain airbag.
The 2011 iQ is equipped with a 1.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces more than 90 horsepower, allows the car to be rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle, and achieves a combined fuel economy "in the high 30s."
The iQ is scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. early next year. Price has not been announced.

That's $4K too much.
Well, I think the acceptable price depends on the fuel economy. I think at 40mpg, $14k for a fully loaded version will prove to be acceptable, but I still wouldn't buy one. The Yaris gets about 40mpg or better in real-world driving (I know from personal experience), and compared to this, it will seem huge. I just don't see the point of these cars on this continent unless they get significantly better fuel economy or cost a lot less.
This one uses a standard iQ body and lithium-ion battery packs to deliver a claimed range of 65 miles. That distance is about only two-thirds the range of other pure electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf.

Scion iQ is a two-door, four-passenger car, powered by Toyota's 90-horsepower. The iQ is a small car that offers the functionality and comfort that drivers expect from a car twice its size.
