Government to Propose Fuel Standards for Big Trucks
By Michelle Krebs October 25, 2010The federal government is to announce Monday the first fuel-economy standards for medium- and
heavy-duty trucks as a way to reduce petroleum consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Associated Press is reporting.
The government is seeking to cut fuel consumption and emissions, depending on the vehicle's size, by 10 to 20 percent and would go into effect on vehicles sold starting in the 2014 model year.
Vehicles covered by the new rules would include tractor-trailers, school buses, delivery vans and heavy-duty trucks; also included would be medium- and heavy-duty versions of the Ford F-Series, Chrysler's Ram and General Motors' Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.
