Edmunds.com's Green Car Advisor reports today that Tesla's Elon Musk is donating a solar generating station to the Hurricane Response Center in Alabama, the U.S. Marine Corps is purchasing Smith Newton electric trucks and Nissan and Mitsubishi have joined in an electric charger sharing venture.

Musk, the entrepreneur who heads electric-vehicle maker Tesla Motors and rocket and space capsule developer Space Exploration Corp., also is chairman of one of the nation's largest solar power system providers, Solar City. Through the Musk Foundation, he's donating a large solar generating station to the Hurricane Response Center operated by the Alabama-based South Bay Communities Alliance.

Smith Electric Vehicles will deliver two all-electric Smith Newton trucks to the U.S. Marine Corps, marking the first time a military organization has ordered the model off the U.S. Government Services Administration schedule. The trucks will be delivered to Camp Pendleton, California, as part of the Marine Corps effort to reduce energy useage by 30 percent by 2015 and boost reliance on renewable electrical energy to 25 percent by 2025.

Nissan Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Co. reportedly will allow drivers of their electric vehicles to share battery chargers at their 2,900 dealerships across Japan in a bid to increase the popularity and convenience of the  cars.
